White Connie Womens Studies 1

Connie White was born on December 8, 1954 in Loudon, Tenn. She became active in the environmental justice organization Save Our Cumberland Mountains in the 1970s and later served as President. She is currently the Associate Director of the Center for Literacy Studies at the University of Tennessee. In this interview, White discusses her family’s history in East Tennessee, her education at University of Tennessee-Knoxville, how she grew aware of the Women’s movement, and her introduction to the group Save Our Cumberland Mountains. She discusses themes related to social justice organizing, including anti-racism training, and she describes her identity in relation to place, class, and gender.
