Polly Murphy moved to eastern Kentucky from New York in the 1960s to work in the War on Poverty program the Appalachian Volunteers. After marrying folksinger Michael Kline, Murphy joined the staff at the Highlander Research and Education Center. Her marriage to Kline ended in the 1970s, and she moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, with her young son and attended the University of Tennessee. Upon graduating she began teaching at the Tennessee School for the Deaf. Here she discusses a Women’s singing group, ‘mothers’ meetings,’ feminist values and the Women’s movement.
