Garland Becki Growing Up 1

Becki Garland has been a counselor for the sexual assault crisis center in Knoxville, Tennessee since the 1980s. Here she discusses growing up in a small town in Tennessee in the 1950s and the expectations that adults had of girls. She moved to Knoxville as a young adult to attend the University of Tennessee, and there she learned about feminism and the Women’s movement. She describes a Women’s health event she attended when she was a student, joining a consciousness-raising group, participating in the first rape crisis hotline at the university, and joining the National Organization of Women. She also reflects on what it means to be a feminist counselor and how the sexual assault crisis center in Knoxville has changed over the years.
