Begalla Martha Womens Spaces 2

Martha Begalla (known as ‘Marty’) grew up just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa., and was educated at the College of Wooster in Ohio from 1964-1967, where she first got a taste of the social justice movements of the 1960s. She moved to Knoxville, Tenn. in 1969 and became Assistant Dean of Women at the University of Tennessee. Here she discusses the faculty and student demonstrations around Women’s issues at the University of Tennessee, the creation of a Women’s studies program and a Women’s athletics program at the university, the creation of the sexual assault crisis center in Knoxville, Tenn., and the formation of the Knoxville Women’s Center.
