Martha Begalla (known as ‘Marty’) grew up just outside of Pittsburgh, Pa., and was educated at the College of Wooster in Ohio from 1964-1967, where she first got a taste of the social justice movements of the 1960s. She moved to Knoxville, Tenn. in 1969 and became Assistant Dean of Women at the University of Tennessee.
